Biography & Historical Record
Pei Jing (裴景, Bùi Cảnh) is a fictional Wei Left Commander (左都督) in Romance of the Three Kingdoms Chapter 106. He has no Sanguozhi biography, no courtesy name, and no dates. Lists of invented officers treat him as Luo Guanzhong’s name for a staff voice in Sima Yi (司马懿, Tư Mã Ý)’s Liaodong campaign against Gongsun Yuan (公孙渊, Công Tôn Uyên). The historical officer who urged a move off the flooded ground — and was executed for it — is recorded as the commandant-clerk Zhang Jing (张静, Trương Tĩnh). The novel splits that pressure into two men: Pei Jing, who speaks and is only threatened, and Qiu Lian (仇连, Cừu Liên), the Right Commander, who repeats the request and is beheaded.
The scene is the autumn siege of Xiangping (襄平). Rain has fallen a month; the plain is three feet under water; grain boats run from the Liao river mouth to the city wall; Wei soldiers sit and sleep in the flood. Pei Jing enters the tent and says the camp is mud, the men cannot stay, and the army should shift to the hills in front. Sima Yi answers that Gongsun Yuan will be taken any day — how can they move camp? Anyone who speaks of moving again will be beheaded. Pei Jing withdraws with a yes. Shortly after, Qiu Lian makes the same plea because the soldiers suffer in the water. Sima Yi says the order is already out, has Qiu Lian executed, and hangs the head at the south gate. The army is cowed. Sima Yi then holds through the rain, refuses Gongsun Yuan’s offer of a hostage son, and cuts down the fleeing father and son. Pei Jing is not named again.
History is silent on a man written 裴景. The Liaodong campaign of 238, the autumn flood, and Sima Yi’s refusal to shift camp are real; the novel’s Left Commander is a literary speaker invented to deliver the first warning.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
Chapter 106 (Gongsun Yuan Dies Defeated at Xiangping; Sima Yi Feigns Illness and Cozens Cao Shuang): During the month-long autumn rain before Xiangping, Left Commander Pei Jing (裴景, Bùi Cảnh) asks Sima Yi to move the drowned camp onto the forward hills. Sima Yi refuses and threatens death for a second mention. Pei Jing bows out. Right Commander Qiu Lian (仇连, Cừu Liên) repeats the request and is beheaded at the south gate. The chapter then finishes Gongsun Yuan and turns to Sima Yi’s later feigned illness against Cao Shuang (曹爽, Tào Sảng). Pei Jing has no part in that second half.

In Novel
Chapter 106
- Pei Jing (裴景, Bùi Cảnh): Left Commander in Sima Yi (司马懿, Tư Mã Ý)’s camp before Xiangping. Autumn rain has stood a month; the ground is three feet under water; supply boats run from the Liao mouth to the wall. Pei Jing enters the tent and says the camp is mud, the men cannot remain, and they should move to the hills in front. Sima Yi answers that Gongsun Yuan (公孙渊, Công Tôn Uyên) will be taken any day and that whoever again mentions moving camp will be beheaded. Pei Jing withdraws. Soon Right Commander Qiu Lian (仇连, Cừu Liên) makes the same plea because the soldiers suffer; Sima Yi has him executed and hangs the head at the south gate. Pei Jing is not named in the rest of the Liaodong finish or in the Cao Shuang half of the chapter.
In History
Summary
- No historical Pei Jing (裴景) is attached to the 238 Liaodong war. The flood, the refusal to shift camp, and an execution for urging that shift are real; the named victim is Zhang Jing (张静).
Year: 238 AD
- Sima Yi besieged Gongsun Yuan at Xiangping. Autumn rains flooded the lines. An officer who pressed to move camp was killed to freeze the army in place. Gongsun Yuan was later captured and executed with his son.
Historical Record
- Sanguozhi Gongsun Yuan / Sima Yi materials and Zizhi Tongjian Jingchu 2. Invented-officer lists identify Qiu Lian with Zhang Jing and leave Pei Jing as a novel-only Left Commander who delivers the first warning and lives.
