Princess Nanyang (南阳公主, Nam Dương công chúa) was an aristocratic noblewoman of Cao Wei and an imperial princess of the Western Jin dynasty. She was the daughter of Grand Tutor Sima Yi (司马懿) and his primary consort Zhang Chunhua (张春华), making her the full elder sister of Western Jin dynastic architects Sima Shi (司马师) and Sima Zhao (司马昭), and paternal aunt to Emperor Wu of Jin, Sima Yan (司马炎).
To consolidate the political alliance between the Sima clan and the paramount intellectual aristocracy of the Central Plains, Princess Nanyang was wed to Xun Yi (荀顗), the sixth son of Cao Cao’s supreme strategist Xun Yu (荀彧). Xun Yi later rose to the pinnacle of civil power in the Western Jin court, serving as Minister of Works (司空) and Grand Commandant (太尉).
Renowned for her dignified bearing, filial devotion, and aristocratic decorum, Princess Nanyang was formally enfeoffed as Princess of Nanyang following Sima Yan’s establishment of the Western Jin dynasty in 265 AD. Historical accounts in the Book of Jin record her maternal concern for her family and her participation in imperial ceremonies of the newly founded dynasty.
