Pei Hui (裴徽, Bùi Huy), courtesy name Jingguang (景光, Cảnh Quang; c. 180s–240s AD), was a celebrated philosopher, statesman, and provincial administrator of the Cao Wei dynasty. He was the son of Eastern Han Imperial Secretariat Director Pei Mao (裴茂), brother of Minister of Works Pei Qian (裴潜), and uncle to the famous statesman and cartographer Pei Xiu (裴秀).
Gifted with extraordinary philosophical clarity, penetrating wisdom, and conversational elegance, Pei Hui emerged as a central luminary of the early Xuanxue (Neo-Daoist Dark Learning) movement. He was an intimate friend and intellectual collaborator of leading ministers He Yan (何晏) and Xiahou Xuan (夏侯玄), who regarded his insights into Laozi and the Book of Changes with profound reverence.
Entering imperial governance, Pei Hui demonstrated outstanding administrative competence, eventually being appointed Inspector of Ji Province (冀州刺史), the economic and demographic heartland of northern China. He governed with benevolence and clarity, patronizing Confucian academies while promoting meritocratic talent. His four sons—Pei Li, Pei Kang, Pei Kai, and Pei Chuo—all achieved ministerial rank in Western Jin, establishing the Hedong Pei clan as one of China’s most celebrated dynasties.
