Biography & Historical Record
Louban (楼班, 樓班, Lâu Ban; ?–207 AD) was the legitimate hereditary Chanyu of the Liaoxi Wuhuan confederation during the late Eastern Han dynasty. He was the biological son of Supreme Wuhuan chieftain Qiu Liju (丘力居). Because Louban was still young when Qiu Liju passed away in the 190s AD, leadership of the Wuhuan tribes was temporarily entrusted to his elder cousin Tadun (蹋顿).
Upon reaching adulthood, Louban formally assumed the title of Chanyu of Liaoxi, while Tadun remained the supreme military commander. The Wuhuan forged an unbreakable military compact with Yuan Shao, receiving imperial seals and intermarrying with Yuan daughters. Following Yuan Shao’s defeat at Guandu, Louban sheltered Yuan Shang and Yuan Xi in northern Hebei.
In 207 AD, Cao Cao launched his audacious expedition through Liucheng, culminating in the Battle of White Wolf Mountain (白狼山之战) where general Zhang Liao routed the Wuhuan and slew Tadun. Louban, along with Yuan Shang and Yuan Xi, fled northeast across the Liao River seeking sanctuary with warlord Gongsun Kang in Liaodong. Fearing Cao Cao’s wrath, Gongsun Kang lured the refugees into an ambush, decapitated Louban, and sent his head to Cao Cao.

Chapter 33: Louban and the Wuhuan horsemen fight fiercely at White Wolf Mountain before fleeing to Liaodong, where Gongsun Kang executes them and surrenders their severed heads to Cao Cao.
