Biography & Historical Record

Liu Cong (刘琮 / 劉琮, Lưu Tông) was the younger son of Liu Biao (刘表, Lưu Biểu) who briefly held Jing Province in 208 and surrendered it intact to Cao Cao (曹操, Tào Tháo). Cao Cao appointed him Inspector of Qing Province and a marquis; later offices (Counsellor Remonstrant, Army Adviser) are sparsely recorded. He was not executed in history.

Mother — Novel vs History: History: Liu Cong’s birth mother (Liu Biao’s earlier wife) died young; Lady Cai / Cai Furen (蔡夫人, Sái Phu Nhân) was stepmother whose Cai clan promoted him over elder brother Liu Qi (刘琦, Lưu Kỳ). Novel: treats Lady Cai as his birth mother. Both must be recorded. Wife: a niece of Lady Cai (not Lady Cai herself).

Advisers including Kuai Yue (蒯越, Khoái Việt) — correct Vietnamese surname reading Khoái for 蒯 (distinct from Cai-clan Sái) — Fu Xun (傅巽, Phó Tốn), and Han Song (韩嵩, Hàn Tung) urged surrender when Cao Cao advanced.

Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms

Chapters 34, 40–42: Cai faction elevates Liu Cong after Liu Biao’s death; he surrenders Xiangyang without fighting. Cao Cao names him Qingzhou inspector. On the road Yu Jin (于禁, Vu Cấm), on secret orders, murders Liu Cong and Lady Cai — a novel-only death. History keeps him alive in Wei service.
