Liu Ao (刘媪 / 昭灵皇后, Lưu Ảo / Chiêu Linh hoàng hậu; d. before 202 BC), was the venerable mother of Western Han founding Emperor Gaozu, Liu Bang (Lưu Bang), and wife of the Grand Emperor Liu Taigong.
A hardworking, traditional peasant matriarch in Zhongyang Village in Pei County, she endured hardship raising Liu Bang, Liu Bo, Liu Xi (Liu Xi), and Princess Luyuan’s mother. In Sanguozhi and Shiji legend, while resting by a great marsh, she dreamed of an encounter with a divine dragon amidst lightning and thunder; Liu Taigong witnessed the celestial dragon coiled above her body, after which she gave birth to Liu Bang. Following the founding of the Han Dynasty in 202 BC, Liu Bang posthumously honored his late mother with the supreme imperial title of Empress Zhaoling (昭灵皇后).

Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji, vol. 8, Annals of Emperor Gaozu): “Empress Zhaoling rested by the marsh and dreamed of a divine being. Thunder shook the sky, and Liu Taigong saw a scaly dragon coiled over her form. Thereupon she conceived Emperor Gaozu.”
