Biography & Historical Record

Ling Lie (凌烈, Lăng Liệt) was the eldest son of Wu general Ling Tong (凌统, Lăng Thống), styled Gongji (公绩, Công Tích). When Ling Tong fell at the Battle of Ruxu in 217 AD at only twenty-nine sui, Sun Quan (孙权, Tôn Quyền) was so stricken that he took Ling Lie and younger brother Ling Feng (凌封, Lăng Phong) into the inner palace and raised them alongside imperial princes. On reaching adulthood Ling Lie inherited his father’s hereditary marquisate and command of Ling Tong’s veteran regiments — the standard Wu pattern of keeping a fallen hero’s line under Sun patronage. The annals give him no major independent battle like his father’s Ruxu charges; his fame is succession, orphan care, and continuity of the Ling corps.

Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms

Not named in ROTK: Ling Tong’s death and heroism appear in the novel’s Wu–Wei river wars; Ling Lie himself is a posthumous household figure in history, not a separate speaking character in Luo Guanzhong’s narrative.
