Liang Qian (梁虔, Lương Kiền) was a Tianshui (天水, Thiên Thủy) clerk who went over to Shu Han (蜀汉, Thục Hán) with Jiang Wei (姜维, Khương Duy). Chen Shou lists him in Jiang Wei’s first notice: when Zhuge Liang (诸葛亮, Gia Cát Lượng) came out of Qishan in Jianxing 6 (228), Jiang Wei, the merit officer Liang Xu (梁绪, Lương Tự), the registrar Yin Shang (尹赏, Doãn Thưởng), and the recorder Liang Qian were on circuit with Administrator Ma Zun (马遵, Mã Tuân). Ma Zun decided they were unsafe, fled by night to Shanggui, and locked them out. Ji county also shut Jiang Wei. The group surrendered to Zhuge Liang. The catalog’s Ji-county / Gangu birthplace is that Tianshui circuit, not a proven home village. The novel delays Liang Qian’s surrender by a chapter and makes him Liang Xu’s younger brother holding Shanggui — a kinship Chen Shou never states.

After the surrender, history is almost silent. Jiang Wei’s mother was left behind when Zhuge Liang pulled back from Jieting; Liang Qian is not given a later generalship, death year, or Wei recapture. The novel, having used him as Shanggui’s stubborn gate and then as the officer Liang Xu talks down, parks him as Shanggui Prefect and moves on. Readers should treat “brother of Liang Xu” as Chapter 93 fiction unless a genealogical source appears. Courtesy name is unknown. Vietnamese Lương Kiền matches 虔.

Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms

Chapter 92–93 (Zhao Yun Slaughters the River; Jiang Boyue Surrenders to Kongming): The catalog’s “Chapter 92” is the start of the Tianshui trap, not Liang Qian’s speaking scenes. In Chapter 93 Ma Zun (马遵, Mã Tuân) sends Jiang Wei (姜维, Khương Duy) with three thousand to hold Ji and Liang Qian (梁虔, Lương Kiền) with three thousand to hold Shanggui. Zhao Yun (赵云, Triệu Vân) is allowed to “miss” Liang Qian so the Shanggui gate can close. Jiang Wei later rides for Shanggui after losing Ji; Liang Qian, told Jiang Wei has already sold the city, refuses him and curses a traitor. Jiang Wei, locked out of both towns, surrenders to Zhuge Liang (诸葛亮, Gia Cát Lượng). He then writes secret letters to Liang Xu (梁绪, Lương Tự) and Yin Shang (尹赏, Doãn Thưởng) in Tianshui. Ma Zun and Xiahou Mao (夏侯楙, Hạ Hầu Mậu) take the letters as proof and move to kill the pair; Liang Xu and Yin Shang open the gates instead. Liang Xu then says Shanggui is held by “my younger brother Liang Qian” and goes in person to call him out. Liang Qian surrenders; Zhuge Liang makes Liang Xu Administrator of Tianshui, Yin Shang prefect of Ji, and Liang Qian prefect of Shanggui. The historical surrender was a locked-out circuit staff, not a brother talking a brother off a wall.
