Biography of Li Jun
Li Jun (李俊), famously known as the “River Dragon” (混江龍), is one of the most remarkable figures in the classic epic Water Margin. Ranking 26th among the 108 Liangshan heroes and representing the Heavenly Longevity Star, he commands the marshland’s formidable fleet. Originating as a salt merchant along the Yangtze River, he possessed peerless swimming prowess and tactical mastery over naval warfare.
Unlike many tragic heroes living during the turbulent Northern Song Dynasty era, Li Jun displayed extraordinary political foresight. After rescuing leader Song Jiang on three critical occasions and delivering decisive naval triumphs against imperial forces led by Gao Qiu, he recognized the corruption waiting at the imperial court following the Fang La campaign.
Strategic Genius and Royal Destiny
Feigning sudden illness to avoid a dubious imperial summons, Li Jun chose voluntary exile alongside loyal brothers Tong Wei and Tong Meng. Together, they gathered followers, set sail across the southern oceans, and successfully established a sovereign realm in Siam (Thailand). This calculated departure spared his companions from court purges and transformed him from an outlaw chieftain into an independent monarch.
