Biography & Historical Record

Lei Xu (Lôi Tự) is a figure who appears in the late Eastern Han dynasty context, primarily recognized through literary accounts rather than robust historical documentation. In official historical texts such as Chen Shou’s Records of the Three Kingdoms (Sanguozhi), there are no records of a general named Lei Xu serving under Zhang Xiu. He is widely considered by historians to be either a fictional character created by Luo Guanzhong for the narrative of the novel, or an extremely minor historical officer whose deeds were not substantial enough to be recorded in official biographies.

Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms

In the 14th-century historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Lei Xu is introduced as a military general serving under the minor warlord Zhang Xiu, who was stationed at Nanyang (Wancheng).

“Zhang Xiu had two generals under his command, Lei Xu and Zhang Xian…”

During Cao Cao’s campaign against Zhang Xiu in Chapter 18, Cao Cao leads a massive army to besiege Wancheng. Zhang Xiu leads his forces out to defend the city, with Lei Xu and his colleague Zhang Xian serving as his vanguard officers. When the two armies clash, Cao Cao’s formidable champion Xu Chu rides out and engages Zhang Xian, swiftly slaying him in a single bout. Witnessing the terrifying strength of Cao Cao’s forces and the loss of Zhang Xian, Zhang Xiu’s army falls into disarray. Lei Xu and the remaining forces are forced to retreat and defend the city walls. Following this battle, Lei Xu disappears from the narrative, and his ultimate fate is left unmentioned.
