Biography & Historical Record

Lady Tian (田氏, Điền Thị) on this page is the Puyang rich household of Romance Chapter 12 — 富户田氏, a clan with hundreds of retainers whom Chen Gong (陈宫, Trần Cung) uses as bait against Cao Cao (曹操, Tào Tháo). The title 田氏 is a surname-house label, not an empress’s personal name. Chapter 12 is Tao Qian’s third offer of Xuzhou and the Puyang fire fight; Cao Wei has no Empress Tian.

History of the 194–195 Yanzhou war knows Lü Bu taking Puyang and Cao Cao nearly dying in a fire ambush; it does not name a Tian household. The novel supplies a local magnate who first lies for Lü Bu and then shuts the gate on him.

Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms

Chapter 12 (Tao Gongzu Thrice Yields Xuzhou; Cao Mengde Fights Lü Bu at Puyang): Chen Gong tells Lu Bu (吕布, Lã Bố) that the Tian can send a secret letter: Lü Bu has marched to Liyang, only Gao Shun (高顺, Cao Thuận) remains. Cao believes Heaven has given him Puyang. Liu Ye (刘晔, Lưu Diệp) splits the army. Cao enters; four walls go up in fire. Dian Wei (典韦, Điển Vi) cuts a path through the burning gate. Later, when Lü Bu is beaten and races for the drawbridge, the Tian raise it and shout that they have already surrendered to Cao. Lü Bu flees toward Dingtao.
