Lady Qiguan (亓官氏, Kỳ Quan thị; d. 485 BC; posthumously Empress Bingling 并灵后), was the devoted, virtuous principal wife of Confucius (孔子), native of the State of Song.

Married to Confucius in 532 BC when the sage was nineteen years old, Lady Qiguan bore their only son, Kong Li (Kong Li – Boyu), whose birth was celebrated by Duke Zhao of Lu with a gift of a carp (hence named Li 鲤). For over four decades, Lady Qiguan managed their humble ancestral home in Qufu through grueling poverty, supporting Confucius while he taught disciples, edited the classics, and endured political exile across the warring states. She passed away in 485 BC, one year before her son Kong Li and four years before Confucius.

Role in History (Kongzi Jiayu)

Family Sayings of Confucius (Kongzi Jiayu): “Lady Qiguan was gentle, frugal, and reverent; she managed the hearth in Qufu, allowing the Master to concentrate on the rites and music of the ancient kings.”
