Biography & Historical Record

Lady Ma (马氏, Mã thị) on this page is the site’s label for a daughter of Ma Chao (马超, Mã Siêu) in the Ma clan family roster — chiefly linked from Ma Cheng (马承, Mã Thừa) as his sister. Chen Shou’s Sanguozhi does not name any daughter of Ma Chao. What history does record are sons: Ma Qiu (马秋, Mã Thu), killed at Hanzhong in 215, and Ma Cheng, who inherited Ma Chao’s marquisate in Shu after 222. Lady Ma therefore belongs to later tradition and game genealogy, not to a specific Pei note or annal entry.

Do not confuse her with Ma Yunlu (马云禄, Mã Vân Lộc), the famous fictional sister from Romance of the Three Kingdoms derivative works and Koei titles — a different character with a full invented name and marriage plots. Lady Ma is the minimal 马氏 label: Ma-clan daughter, unnamed in SGZ, kept in the wiki so Ma Chao’s Children field can list daughter beside sons without inventing a courtesy name.

She is also not any other 马氏 on the site (numerous Ma-surname officers). Identifying facts: daughter of Ma Chao, sister of Ma Cheng in roster tradition, no SGZ biography of her own.

Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms

Luo Guanzhong does not stage a named daughter for Ma Chao. Ma Yunlu appears only in later storytelling and games. Lady Ma as 马氏 is a site roster convenience for the Shu Ma household after Ma Chao’s death — parallel to how unnamed wives are titled by clan (杨氏, 董氏) when history gives no given name.

Summary

  • Lady Ma (马氏, Mã thị) is not attested in the core text of Chen Shou's Sanguozhi. Official history records Ma Chao's son and heir Ma Cheng and the executed Hanzhong son Ma Qiu, but no daughter by name. The label 马氏 on this page follows later game rosters and the site's Ma family wiki, where Ma Cheng's relatives include a sister Lady Ma — a placeholder for Shu-period daughters the chronicles did not name.

Historical Record

  • SGZ Wei 18 (Ma Chao); Shu records on Ma Cheng. No daughter entry. Treat as later tradition / roster figure, not a claim of Han-history documentation.
