Lady Dong (董氏, Đổng thị) was a wife of Ma Chao (马超, Mã Siêu) recorded in Pei Songzhi’s annotations on Chen Shou’s Ma Chao biography. When Ma Chao abandoned Zhang Lu (张鲁, Trương Lỗ) in Hanzhong and joined Liu Bei (刘备, Lưu Bị) during the Yi Province campaign (214), he left Lady Dong and their son Ma Qiu (马秋, Mã Thu) behind. After Cao Cao (曹操, Tào Tháo) conquered Hanzhong the next year and received Zhang Lu’s surrender, he rewarded Zhang Lu’s adviser Yan Pu (阎圃, Diêm Phổ) by giving him Lady Dong, and commanded Zhang Lu to kill Ma Qiu with his own blade — a deliberate humiliation of Ma Chao’s line.

Chen Shou writes only 董氏, the Dong-clan label; no given name survives. She is Ma Chao’s later northwestern wife, distinct from Lady Yang (杨氏, Dương thị), the first wife killed with other children at Jicheng c. 213 when Yang Fu (杨阜, Dương Phụ) rebelled. Lady Yang’s tragedy is earlier and at Jicheng; Lady Dong’s unfolds at Hanzhong as hostage politics after Ma Chao had already thrown his lot with Shu.

Homonyms on this site: She is not Lady Dong (董夫人, Đổng Phu Nhân), wife of Liu Chang (刘苌, Lưu Xương) and mother of Emperor Ling — a completely different Dong-clan woman in the Hejian imperial line. Chapters 64–65: Ma Chao’s flight from Longxi to Zhang Lu and then to Liu Bei leaves family members in enemy hands. The novel uses the hostage wife and son to heighten Ma Chao’s isolation — he wins glory at Chengdu but cannot save the household he abandoned in Hanzhong. Cao Cao’s disposal of Lady Dong and Ma Qiu is treated as political theater rather than a named scene for Lady Dong herself.
