Biography & Historical Record
Hu Jinding (胡金定, Hồ Kim Định) is a celebrated folk heroine of Three Kingdoms storytelling, honored as the devoted wife of Guan Yu (关羽, Quan Vũ) and the mother of the warrior Guan Suo (关索, Quan Tác). She does not appear in Chen Shou’s Sanguozhi or in Luo Guanzhong’s standard 120-chapter Romance of the Three Kingdoms, but dominates the Ming-era narrative Hua Guan Suo Zhuan (花关索传, Hoa Quan Tác truyện) — a text rediscovered in Chenghua-era manuscripts that shaped southern drama, shadow plays, and regional opera.
According to the legend, when Guan Yu killed a tyrannical despot in Hedong and fled into exile, Hu Jinding remained behind pregnant. She bore and raised Guan Suo alone through hardship, training him in martial arts and moral duty. Years later mother and son crossed mountains and rivers to Sichuan, reuniting with Guan Yu and Liu Bei (刘备, Lưu Bị) at Jiameng Pass during the Yi Province campaign — one of the most beloved reunion scenes in Chinese popular theater.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
Not in the standard ROTK: Hu Jinding belongs to the Hua Guan Suo Zhuan cycle and derivative folk opera rather than Luo Guanzhong’s main novel. Later storytelling traditions sometimes fold Guan Suo into broader Three Kingdoms lore, and Hu Jinding appears as his steadfast mother in Pingshu recitations and Sichuanese opera.
