Guo Xun

Biography & Historical Record

Guo Xun (郭勋, Quách Tuân) was Eastern Han Inspector of Youzhou (幽州刺史) when the Yellow Turban Rebellion broke in Zhongping 1 (184 AD). He has no standalone biography in Sanguozhi. His death is a dated line in Hou Hanshu 8, Annals of Emperor Ling: in the fourth month of that year, Yellow Turbans of Guangyang commandery (广阳; commandery seat at Ji, present-day southwest Beijing) killed the Youzhou inspector Guo Xun and the Guangyang administrator Liu Wei (刘卫, Lưu Vệ). Zizhi Tongjian 58 repeats the same pairing under Han Annals 50, placing the killing in the same spring–summer sequence as Zhu Jun (朱儁, Chu Tuấn)‘s defeat by Bocai (波才, Ba Tài) and the Guangyang rising that tore the northern circuit while Huangfu Song (皇甫嵩, Hoàng Phủ Tung) was still locked at Changshe.

Youzhou faced Wuhuan and Xianbei pressure as well as the new religious armies. An inspector there was the court’s northern hinge: if Guangyang fell, the road from Ji toward the capital marches lay open. The annal does not say whether Guo Xun died in the field, in the prefectural city, or on the road; it records only that Guangyang Yellow Turbans killed him together with his commandery colleague. Later Youzhou names — Liu Yu (刘虞, Lưu Ngu) as shepherd, then Gongsun Zan — belong to the next decade. Guo Xun is the officer who held the post at the first shock and did not survive the fourth month.

Luo Guanzhong never gives him a speaking part. Chapter 1 stages Zhang Jue’s sermon, the Peach Garden oath, and the court’s dispatch of Lu Zhi (卢植, Lư Thực), Huangfu Song, and Zhu Jun against the heartland Turbans. Guo Xun’s death belongs to that same Zhongping spring, on the Youzhou wing the novel does not dramatize. Readers meet the name because the histories date the northern collapse to the same weeks as the Yingchuan and Julu campaigns — not because he stands on the Peach Garden page.

Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms

Chapter 1 (Three Heroes Swear Brotherhood in the Peach Garden; Heroes First Win Merit by Slaying the Yellow Turbans): The chapter follows Zhang Jue (张角, Trương Giác) and his brothers, the Ten Attendants’ corruption, Liu Yan (刘焉, Lưu Yên)‘s memorial on provincial inspectors, and the court’s appointment of Lu Zhi as General of the Household of the North against Zhang Jue, with Huangfu Song and Zhu Jun sent into Yingchuan. Guo Xun is not named in that narrative. In the same historical weeks Hou Hanshu 8 records Guangyang Yellow Turbans killing him and Liu Wei — the northern counterpart to Zhu Jun’s reverse before Bocai and to Zhang Mancheng’s killing of the Nanyang administrator Chu Gong. The novel’s opening war and Guo Xun’s death are one crisis seen from two archives: Luoyang’s chosen generals on the page, Youzhou’s fallen inspector in the annals.

• No father, mother, spouse, or children named in Hou Hanshu 8 or Zizhi Tongjian 58. Some later notes call him a younger brother of Liangzhou Inspector Guo Hong (郭闱) of Jinyang; that kinship is not in the Ling annals and is marked here as uncertain.
