Here is the exhaustive biography of Huangfu Song (皇甫嵩), courtesy name Yizhen (義真 / 义真) (? – 195), one of the principal Han generals who suppressed the Yellow Turban Rebellion and later clashed with Dong Zhuo, incorporating historical records and the narrative of Romance of the Three Kingdoms.

Historical Career

Huangfu Song was a native of Anding Commandery and a member of a distinguished northwestern clan. In 184, at the outbreak of the Yellow Turban Rebellion, he was appointed one of the three imperial commanders (together with Lu Zhi and Zhu Jun) to suppress the uprising. Operating mainly in Yingchuan and later in Ji Province, he and Zhu Jun defeated Zhang Bao and Zhang Liang by fire attack at Changshe, then pursued and destroyed Zhang Liang’s forces at Quyang. He ordered Zhang Jue’s coffin opened, the corpse beheaded and sent to the capital. For these victories he was made General of the Chariots and Cavalry and Inspector (later Governor) of Ji Province; he also restored Lu Zhi’s rank and advanced Cao Cao.

He later campaigned against the Liang Province rebels (Bian Zhang, Han Sui and others). When Dong Zhuo was ordered to hand his troops over to Huangfu Song, Dong refused. After Dong seized power in 189, he nursed a grudge against Huangfu Song (partly because of earlier military disagreements and an incident involving Huangfu Song’s aunt). Huangfu Song was briefly imprisoned but released through the intercession of Dong Zhuo’s son (or other admirers). He continued to behave with marked independence. After Dong Zhuo’s assassination he participated in the campaign against Dong’s remaining relatives at Meiwu. He died of illness in 195 and was posthumously honoured as Valiant Cavalry General.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms Portrayal

In Chapters 1–2 Huangfu Song is one of the three Imperial Commanders sent against the Yellow Turbans. With Zhu Jun he drives Zhang Bao and Zhang Liang from their camps by fire, then joins Cao Cao to defeat Zhang Liang. He is rewarded as General of the Flying Chariots and Imperial Protector of Jizhou; he intercedes for Lu Zhi and recommends Cao Cao. He loses rank during the ascendancy of the Ten Regular Attendants. In Chapter 9 he appears among the generals who attack Dong Zhuo’s family at Meiwu Castle after Wang Yun’s successful plot. The novel largely follows the historical outline of his Yellow Turban campaigns while compressing his later career.

Historical Note

Huangfu Song was one of the most successful Han generals of the Yellow Turban suppression and a consistent opponent of Dong Zhuo’s ambitions. His victories at Changshe and Quyang, his restoration of Lu Zhi, and his later defiance of Dong Zhuo established him as a model of competent, relatively upright imperial command. The novel preserves the essential military achievements while simplifying the complex later politics surrounding Dong Zhuo and the Liang Province wars. He remains a standard example of a capable late-Han general who never founded a personal warlord regime.
