Biography & Historical Record

Guan Shu (管叔, Quản Thục) was a respected local magistrate and civil official of the Cao Wei Dynasty. He served as the Magistrate of Licheng (Licheng Zhang / 利城长) in Qingzhou. He is most celebrated in Chinese history and literature as the father, early teacher, and guardian of the immortal master of divination and astronomical prodigy Guan Lu (管辂, Quản Lộ — courtesy name Gongming, hailed as China’s greatest diviner of the Three Kingdoms era).

Recognizing Guan Lu’s precocious fascination with the celestial bodies and cosmic mysteries from early childhood, Guan Shu nurtured his son’s extraordinary genius. When young Guan Lu spent nights gazing at the stars instead of playing with village children, Guan Shu initially worried for his health, but upon hearing his son’s astonishingly profound explanations of the lunar mansions, constellations, and the Classic of Changes (Yijing), Guan Shu realized his son possessed heaven-sent wisdom. He provided Guan Lu with rare classical scrolls, encouraged his intellectual pursuits, and welcomed visiting scholars to test the young prodigy.

Role in Romance & Historical Chronicles

“When Guan Lu was eight or nine years old, he loved looking up at the stars. When his father Guan Shu questioned him, the boy spoke of the sun, moon, and celestial mechanics like a master astronomer; Guan Shu marvelled and said: ‘This boy is truly an extraordinary soul.'”
— Sanguozhi (Biography of Guan Lu)

In Chapter 69 of Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Guan Lu’s legendary upbringing under Guan Shu is invoked when the master diviner amazes Cao Cao with infallible predictions regarding the Battle of Mount Dingjun and the demise of Xiahou Yuan.
