Gongsun Yan (公孙延, Công Tôn Diên) was an Eastern Han figure from Xiangping County, Liaodong Commandery (present-day Liaoyang, Liaoning Province) and the father of the regional warlord Gongsun Du (公孙度, Công Tôn Độ). Originally leading a modest life in Liaodong, Gongsun Yan was forced to flee his home district alongside his young son to seek refuge in Xuantu Commandery after fleeing official entanglement.
In Xuantu Commandery, their fortunes changed when Gongsun Yu, the Grand Administrator of Xuantu, took pity on Gongsun Du because his childhood name, Shiba, matched that of Gongsun Yu’s deceased son. Gongsun Yu sponsored Gongsun Du’s education and recommended him into government service. Years later, when Gongsun Du rose to become the Grand Administrator of Liaodong and self-proclaimed Marquis of Liaodong, he honored his father Gongsun Yan and elevated the ancestral prestige of their family line along the northeastern frontier.
