Biography & Historical Record

Geng Gong (耿恭, Canh Cung), courtesy name Bozong (伯宗, tự Bá Tông), was an Eastern Han frontier commander whose defense of Shule City (疏勒城) in 75–76 AD became one of China’s classic siege legends. As Wuji Colonel (戊己校尉) in the Western Regions, he held out against Xiongnu siege after water was cut off — digging fifteen zhang without finding water, drinking horse-dung juice, then praying at the well until a spring burst forth. Court eulogists said his fidelity “surpassed Su Wu”; only thirteen of his men survived to recross the Jade Gate.

Geng Gong does not walk the Three Kingdoms stage as a living character. Luo Guanzhong invokes him in Chapter 89 when Zhuge Liang, campaigning against the Nanman, faces poison streams and drought — the verse compares Geng Gong’s prayer-well miracle to Zhuge’s own night vigil that brings sweet water to Shu ranks. He is an anachronistic moral exemplar, like Deng Yu in Chapter 43.

Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms

Chapter 89 (Zhuge Liang Again Defeats the Nanman King; The Man King Four Times Falls into Captivity): Deep in barbarian territory Zhuge Liang’s army digs more than twenty sites without water; soldiers panic. At night Zhuge burns incense and prays that if Heaven has not abandoned Han, sweet springs will appear — by dawn every pit fills. The chapter’s verse praises him: “Geng Gong bowed at the well and sweet springs came; Zhuge in sincerity made water rise by night.” (耿恭拜井甘泉出,诸葛虔诚水夜生.) The Nanman king Meng Huo and Duosi King watch Shu troops drink freely and call them divine soldiers.
