Biography & Historical Record

Gaotang Sheng (高堂生, Cao Đường Sinh), personal name Bo (伯), was an eminent Confucian master, classical scholar, and textual preserver of the State of Lu (鲁国) during the late Qin and early Western Han dynasty (late 3rd to early 2nd century BC). He is immortalized in Chinese intellectual history as the great savior and transmitter of the Classic of Rites (Yili / 仪礼, Nghi Lễ — 17 chapters) following the catastrophic “Burning of Books and Burying of Scholars” (焚书坑儒) perpetrated by the First Emperor of Qin.

Possessing an extraordinary eidetic memory and deep reverence for the Duke of Zhou and Confucius, Gaotang Sheng committed the ancient seventeen treatises on ceremonial rites, court rituals, mourning protocols, and aristocratic etiquette to memory. During the reign of Emperor Gaozu (Liu Bang) and Emperor Wen of Han, when the Han court sought to restore ancient civilization, Gaotang Sheng stepped forward to recite and teach the seventeen chapters of the Rites of the Officers (士礼), allowing them to be inscribed on bamboo and silk for the imperial archives. He is the venerable founding ancestor of the illustrious Gaotang clan of Taishan, whose direct descendant was the famed Cao Wei moral minister Gaotang Long (高堂隆).

Role in Romance & Historical Chronicles

“When Qin’s fires turned the bamboo annals of antiquity to ash, the rites of the Zhou kings survived solely in the beating heart and steadfast mind of Gaotang Sheng.”
— Records of the Grand Historian (Biographies of Confucian Scholars)

In historical and classical studies, Gaotang Sheng is revered as the sole conduit through whom the authentic ceremonial culture of antiquity was rescued from total oblivion and bequeathed to subsequent imperial dynasties.
