Biography & Historical Record
Gao Sheng (高升, Cao Thắng) (?–184, novel dating) is a Yellow Turban front-line commander under Zhang Bao (Yellow Turbans) (张宝, Trương Bảo), the “General of the Earth” (地公将军), in Luo Guanzhong’s Romance of the Three Kingdoms. He has no independent biography in Chen Shou’s Records of the Three Kingdoms; treat offices, speeches, and death as literary. His whole record is one Chapter 2 duel that establishes Zhang Fei (张飞, Trương Phi)’s early ferocity while Liu Bei’s volunteers fight under imperial commanders against the Zhang brothers’ rebellion.
In the novel, after Yellow Turban forces under Zhang Bao take punishment from Huangfu Song (皇甫嵩, Hoàng Phủ Tung) and Zhu Jun (朱儁, Chu Tuấn) around Yingchuan, remnant camps form near mountain ground often associated with Quyang / Yangcheng fighting. Zhu Jun posts nearby and orders the volunteer trio—Liu Bei (刘备, Lưu Bị), Guan Yu (关羽, Quan Vũ), and Zhang Fei—to press the assault. Gao Sheng rides out from Zhang Bao’s lines, loudly taunts the Han vanguard, and meets Zhang Fei’s charge. After several bouts he cannot withstand the serpent spear and falls; Yellow Turban morale at that camp wavers and the government army pushes harder.
He is typical of early-Romance named lieutenants: enough identity to stage a duel, not enough to carry a faction after death. Games and popular lists inherit him from the novel, not from a recovered SGZ entry under 高升.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
Chapter 2 (Zhang Yide Angrily Whips the Government Inspector; He Jin Plots to Kill the Eunuchs — Yellow Turban fighting half): Gao Sheng (高升, Cao Thắng) serves as deputy / vanguard officer under Zhang Bao (张宝, Trương Bảo). When Zhu Jun (朱儁, Chu Tuấn) and Liu Bei’s volunteers close on Zhang Bao’s mountain camp, Gao Sheng rides forth to challenge the imperial line. Zhang Fei (张飞, Trương Phi) accepts, spears him after a short exchange, and the camp’s confidence breaks. The same chapter’s wider arc still belongs to Zhang Bao’s sorcery, Liu Bei’s arrow wound on Zhang Bao, and Yan Zheng’s later betrayal—Gao Sheng’s death is the opening martial beat that proves Zhang Fei’s worth before those larger turns.
Without Gao Sheng, Zhang Fei’s first major named kill in the Yellow Turban war would be anonymous. With him, the Peach Garden brothers each receive early battlefield credit: Guan Yu and Zhang Fei against phantoms and champions, Liu Bei against Zhang Bao himself.
