Biography & Historical Record
Dong Huang (董璜, Đổng Hoàng) (d. 192 AD) was a nephew of the warlord Dong Zhuo (董卓, Đổng Trác) and a core member of the Dong clan’s inner military circle after Luoyang fell in 189 AD. Son of Dong Zhuo’s deceased elder brother, he rose through nepotism to palace-facing commands that placed imperial bodyguards and inner-court security under family control.
He held titles including Palace Attendant (侍中) and General of the Household (中郎将), making him one of Dong Zhuo’s chief enforcers among court officials. When the capital relocated to Chang’an and the fortress of Meiwu (郿坞, Mê Ổ) was built to hoard grain and treasure, Dong Huang shared garrison responsibility with his uncle Dong Min (董旻, Đổng Mân) — the clan’s insurance policy if Luoyang could not be held.
Meiwu Garrison & Court Role
Meiwu was designed as a private kingdom: walls, granaries, and treasuries sufficient to outlast any siege while Dong Zhuo continued to terrorise officials in Chang’an. Dong Huang’s command there meant he controlled access to the family’s reserves and could mobilise household troops independent of regular imperial garrisons — a deliberate fragmentation of military power that kept loyalty within the bloodline.
Court records and novel tradition portray him as arrogant toward metropolitan ministers, relying on uncle Dong Zhuo’s protection. His dual civil-military titles placed him at the intersection of ritual and armed enforcement; under a healthy dynasty that role supported the throne, but under Dong Zhuo it became a tool of intimidation.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In the novel Dong Huang appears as a loyal clan commander at Meiwu. After Wang Yun (王允, Vương Doãn) and Lu Bu (吕布, Lã Bố) assassinate Dong Zhuo (Chapter 9), he attempts to rally Meiwu’s garrison but is overwhelmed when Huangfu Song (皇甫嵩, Hoàng Phủ Tung) storms the fortress. Captured with Dong Bai (董白, Đổng Bạch) and other relatives, he is executed as part of the wholesale purge of the Dong faction — the violent end of Liangzhou domination over the Han court.
