Chen Yuan (陈元, Trần Nguyên) is a fictional character in Luo Guanzhong’s Romance of the Three Kingdoms. He has no independent biography in Chen Shou’s Records of the Three Kingdoms. In the novel he appears only in the closing chapter as a subordinate of the Jin minister Yang Hu (羊祜), offering cautious counsel during the final campaigns against Eastern Wu.

Chapter 120 (Recommending Du Yu, An Old General Offers New Plans; Capturing Sun Hao, Three Kingdoms Becomes One) covers Jin’s conquest of Wu and the unification of China. After Sun Hao (孙皓) becomes Emperor of Wu, Lu Kang (陆抗) sends gifts of wine to Yang Hu’s camp as a gesture amid the stalemate on the Yangtze frontier. Yang Hu accepts and begins drinking freely at a banquet. Chen Yuan, one of Yang Hu’s officers, urgently begs him to drink in moderation lest harm come of the enemy’s gift — a brief moment of prudence before Yang Hu returns to council and issues the great Jin invasion orders naming Du Yu (杜预), Wang Jun (王濬), and other commanders.
