Biography & Historical Record
Bian Xi (died 200 AD) is a fictional officer introduced in Luo Guanzhong’s historic novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. In the novel, he is depicted as a former Yellow Turban rebel leader who submitted to the warlord Cao Cao following the collapse of the peasant uprising. Impressed by his martial capabilities, Cao Cao appointed him as an officer under the imperial army and assigned him to guard Yushui Pass (Sishui Pass).
During Guan Yu’s famous journey riding alone for a thousand miles to rejoin Liu Bei, Bian Xi was stationed at Yushui Pass, the third gate Guan Yu needed to clear. Knowing that Guan Yu was far superior in martial combat and had slain the previous pass commanders Dong Xi and Kong Xiu, Bian Xi devised a treacherous assassination plot. He arranged a grand banquet inside the Zhenguo Temple near the pass, ostensibly to welcome Guan Yu with respect. In secret, Bian Xi concealed two hundred heavily armed assassins behind temple curtains, intending to strike at Guan Yu once he was intoxicated during the feast.
However, a Buddhist monk named Pujing, who was a fellow countryman from Guan Yu’s hometown of Hedong, recognized Guan Yu and realized the danger. During the feast, Pujing dropped subtle hints by tapping a tea cup and signaling with his eyes toward the hidden weapons. Alerted to the trap, Guan Yu confronted Bian Xi, drawing his Qinglong Yanyuedao (Green Dragon Crescent Blade). Panic-stricken, Bian Xi fled toward the temple courtyard and attempted to hurl his specialized meteor hammer (flying mace) at Guan Yu. Guan Yu effortlessly parried the projectile and sliced Bian Xi in half from head to waist, executing him on the spot and liberating Yushui Pass to continue his journey.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In Luo Guanzhong’s Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Bian Xi’s entire narrative unfolds in Chapter 27. As the defender of Yushui Pass, Bian Xi recognizes that he cannot defeat Guan Yu in single combat. He arranges an ambush at Zhenguo Temple with two hundred hidden assassins behind the curtains. Monk Pujing, a fellow townsman of Guan Yu, secretly warns Guan Yu during the banquet. Exposed, Bian Xi attempts to hurl his meteor hammer at Guan Yu while fleeing through the courtyard corridors. Guan Yu deflects the weapon with his sword and cuts Bian Xi in two, breaking through the third pass in his iconic campaign.
