Life and Military Service of Zou Dan

Zou Dan was a prominent military officer serving under the northern warlord Gongsun Zan during the late Eastern Han dynasty and the threshold of the Three Kingdoms era. Appointed as the Grand Administrator of Yuyang, he was entrusted with governing key frontier territories and defending against hostile regional coalitions.

In 194 AD, tensions escalated dramatically after Gongsun Zan executed the respected imperial governor Liu Yu. Vengeful loyalists led by Yan Rou and Xianyu Fu formed an alliance with the northern Wuhuan tribes and secured military aid from Yuan Shao. Gongsun Zan mobilized his forces to suppress this growing insurrection. During the fierce confrontation at Mount Luhe, Zou Dan led the vanguard but was completely outmaneuvered, resulting in his death and the collapse of his garrison.

Zou Dan in Historical Records and Fiction

In Luo Guanzhong’s historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, he is portrayed briefly as a steadfast officer in Gongsun Zan’s northern army. While his literary role is minor, his historical defeat marked a critical turning point that weakened Gongsun Zan’s grip on You Province.
