The Life and Rebellion of Zhu Bao
Zhu Bao was a regional administrator serving the state of Shu Han during the tumultuous Three Kingdoms period in ancient China. Governing Zangke Commandery, he held substantial administrative influence across the rugged southern frontier. Following the death of Liu Bei in 223 AD, extensive political unrest erupted across the Nanzhong region, prompting several regional chieftains and disaffected local leaders to openly defy imperial authority in Chengdu.
Joining forces with prominent regional warlords such as Yong Kai and Gao Ding, Zhu Bao coordinated with neighboring insurgent forces to resist central rule. This alliance threatened the stability of the young emperor Liu Shan’s realm. In response, Chancellor Zhuge Liang organized the historic Zhuge Liang’s Southern Campaign in 225 AD to suppress the unrest and secure the southern borders.
Depiction in History and Folklore
Historical records from the Records of the Three Kingdoms indicate that Shu Han general Ma Zhong led the vanguard against the rebel forces in Zangke Commandery, successfully crushing the uprising and executing the insurgent leaders. In popular historical fiction, such as the classic novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, the downfall of the rebels is dramatized through psychological stratagems. Zhuge Liang deliberately sowed discord between the rebel factions, prompting Gao Ding to turn against his ally and send the warrior E Huan to slay Zhu Bao on the battlefield.
