Biography & Historical Record
Zhao Yue (赵月, 趙月, Triệu Nguyệt; ?–213 AD) was a young nobleman and tragic martyr of Liang Province during the Three Kingdoms period. He was the son of military advisor Zhao Ang (赵昂) and the legendary heroine Wang Yi (王异), who famously orchestrated the defense of Jicheng and Lucheng against the warlord Ma Chao (马超).
Following Ma Chao’s brutal conquest of Jicheng in 213 AD, Zhao Ang was forced to pledge fealty to save the civilian populace. To guarantee Zhao Ang’s allegiance, Ma Chao demanded that Zhao Yue be handed over as a hostage and sent south to Zhang Lu’s territory in Hanzhong (Nanzheng).
When Zhao Ang and Wang Yi secretly organized a loyalist conspiracy with Yang Fu and Jiang Xu to expel Ma Chao, Zhao Ang hesitated, weeping: “Our son Yue is in Hanzhong, what shall we do?” Wang Yi sternly responded: “To wash clean a great disgrace for state and sovereign, we would not hesitate to sacrifice our own lives! What is a single son compared to righteous duty?” Zhao Ang resolved to fight, driving Ma Chao out of Liang Province. Enraged by their uprising, Ma Chao retaliated by murdering Zhao Yue in Hanzhong.
