Biography & Historical Record

Zhang Yu (张郁, Trương Úc) was a noble officer and court official of Shu Han and the Western Jin dynasty. Hailing from Nanchong in Baxi Commandery, he was the second son of Zhang Yi (张嶷), the famed General Who Pacifies the Distant, and younger brother of Zhang Wan (张微).

Following his father’s heroic death at the Battle of Mount Qi in 254 AD, the Shu Han imperial court under Liu Shan showered the Zhang family with honors. While the eldest son inherited the primary marquisate, Zhang Yu was specially enfeoffed as a Marquis of Guannei (关内侯). Zhang Yu served in the military administration of Shu Han and later held civil appointments in Yi Province under the Western Jin dynasty, maintaining his family’s illustrious name.
