The Life and Legacy of You Chu

You Chu (courtesy name Zhongyun) was a prominent administrative official and regional governor serving the state of Cao Wei during China’s turbulent Three Kingdoms period. Hailing from Gaoji in Guangyang commandery, he earned widespread renown throughout the northern frontiers for his administrative acumen, scholarly demeanor, and upright character. Unlike many contemporary figures defined purely by martial exploits, he stood out as an intellectual civil administrator capable of extraordinary military resilience when crisis struck.

Defending Longxi Against Northern Invasions

His most defining historical moment occurred in 228 AD, when Shu Han’s chancellor Zhuge Liang launched his renowned First Northern Expedition into the western borders of Cao Wei. As sudden panic swept across the frontier, neighboring commanderies such as Nan’an, Tianshui, and Anding quickly capitulated to the approaching Shu forces. Facing immense isolation and pressure, You Chu gathered the officials, soldiers, and civilian population of Longxi to bolster their collective defense.

Demonstrating supreme leadership, he secured the fortress gates and famously negotiated terms of honor, stating that if the Wei court failed to dispatch reinforcements within thirty days, he would surrender, but until that deadline passed, he would fight to the death. His unyielding stance maintained morale and stalled Shu forces long enough for senior general Zhang He to achieve a decisive victory at the Battle of Jieting. Impressed by his steadfast loyalty and courage, Emperor Cao Rui rewarded You Chu with the title of Marquis of Guannei and appointed him Grand Administrator of Longxi.
