Yang Chai

Biography & Historical Record

Yang Chai (杨柴 / 羊衜, Dương Sài / Dương Đạo) was an esteemed statesman, classical scholar, and provincial governor of the Cao Wei dynasty. A senior member of the illustrious Taishan Yang clan (泰山羊氏), he served with distinction as the Grand Administrator of Shangdang (上党太守) and later was awarded the posthumous rank of General of the Guard and Duke of Guannong.

Yang Chai contracted prestigious matrimonial alliances that shaped the political and literary summit of the era: his first wife was a daughter of the venerable Han Grand Commandant Kong Rong (孔融), and his second wife was the younger daughter of the legendary polymath and calligrapher Cai Yong (蔡邕 — younger sister of the immortal poetess Cai Yan / Cai Wenji / 蔡琰). Through these unions, Yang Chai fathered Yang Hu (羊祜, Dương Hỗ — supreme military architect of the Jin conquest of Wu) and Empress Jingxian (Yang Huiyu) (羊徽瑜 — empress consort to Sima Shi).

Role in Romance & Historical Chronicles

“Yang Chai was broad-minded, righteous, and perceptive in judging human character. He governed Shangdang with benevolence and strict law, ensuring peace across the northern commanderies.”
— Book of Jin (Jin Shu), Biography of Yang Hu

Although he died before his children reached their zenith, Yang Chai’s moral teachings and scholarly legacy left an indelible mark on Chinese history. His son Yang Hu became the very soul of chivalry on the Jingzhou frontier opposite Lu Kang, and his daughter guided the imperial court of Western Jin.
