The Life and Career of Sun Zi

Sun Zi, courtesy name Yanlong, was a pivotal statesman and senior bureaucrat in the state of Cao Wei during the turbulent Three Kingdoms era. Unlike generals celebrated for battlefield valor, he rose to prominence through his sharp intellect, profound administrative competence, and deep understanding of imperial governance. Serving four successive rulers—Cao Cao, Cao Pi, Cao Rui, and Cao Fang—he became one of the most durable figures in central court politics.

During the reign of Emperor Cao Rui, state affairs increasingly relied on the central secretariat. Together, Liu Fang and Sun Zi dominated the imperial secretariat for decades. Known collectively as “Sun-Liu,” the duo drafted critical imperial edicts, managed confidential state affairs, and significantly influenced succession decisions, ensuring political continuity during volatile administrative transitions.

Depiction in Romance of the Three Kingdoms

In Luo Guanzhong’s classic novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, he is portrayed as a prudent and discerning court advisor. Rather than commanding armies in the field, he operates behind the scenes as a stabilizing force within the Wei capital, offering measured counsel during factional power struggles and imperial shifts.
