Biography & Historical Record
Sun Lu (孙虑, Tôn Lự) (213–232 AD), courtesy name Zizhi (子智, Tử Trí), was an imperial prince of Eastern Wu and the second son of founding emperor Sun Quan (孙权, Tôn Quyền). Renowned from early youth for his intelligence, martial spirit, and filial piety, he enjoyed the deep affection of his father and the high respect of civil and military officials throughout the southern realm.
In 224 AD, at the tender age of eleven, Sun Lu was enfeoffed as the Marquis of Jianchang (建昌侯). Recognizing his unusual maturity and sharp judgment, Sun Quan entrusted him with garrison duties at Banfu (半州), placing veteran minister Pan Zhang (潘璋) and seasoned advisors under his administration. Sun Lu was granted authority to hold his own military staff, maintaining strict discipline and winning praise for his restrained conduct. Unlike many imperial scions of the era who indulged in luxuries, Sun Lu took keen interest in statecraft and military affairs. When Sun Quan formally declared himself Emperor of Wu in 229 AD, Sun Lu’s princely honors were elevated, and he served as a stabilizing pillar among the younger imperial family.
Tragically, Sun Lu fell gravely ill in 232 AD and passed away at the young age of twenty. His untimely demise caused immense grief to Sun Quan, who wept bitterly and mourned him deeply. Because Sun Lu died without heirs, his fief was absorbed back into the state, but his passing removed one of the most promising and level-headed princes from the imperial court, leaving a void that later contributed to the destructive succession crises of the Two Palaces.
