Biography of Sui Yuanjin

Sui Yuanjin was a military officer serving under northern warlord Yuan Shao during the late Eastern Han dynasty and the turbulent Three Kingdoms era. Documented in Chen Shou’s dynastic histories and Sima Guang’s comprehensive chronicle Zizhi Tongjian, he is remembered for his critical logistical role at the vital strategic grain depot of Wuchao during the Battle of Guandu in 200 AD.

During the protracted confrontation between Yuan Shao and Cao Cao along the Guandu frontline, Yuan Shao amassed vast quantities of grain and military provisions at Wuchao, forty li north of the main front. To safeguard this lifeblood of the northern coalition, Yuan Shao assigned veteran commander Chunyu Qiong to oversee the base with over ten thousand troops, appointing subordinate officers Han Juzi, Lu Weihuang, and Zhao Rui to fortify the perimeter. However, the Wuchao garrison grew complacent, believing Cao Cao’s depleted host would never venture deep behind northern battle lines.

In the tenth month of 200 AD, following the strategic defection of advisor Xu You, Cao Cao received exact intelligence regarding Wuchao’s location. Leading an elite nocturnal strike force disguised in northern uniforms, Cao Cao launched a surprise assault at dawn, setting fire to the storage facilities. The defending division commanders mounted a fierce defense amidst blinding smoke and raging fires, but their perimeter collapsed under relentless pressure. The total incineration of Wuchao’s grain supplies shattered northern morale and precipitated the collapse of Yuan Shao’s hegemony.

Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms

In Chapter 30 of the 14th-century classic novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Sui Yuanjin is depicted attempting desperately to stem the midnight inferno that sealed Yuan Shao’s downfall.

In the literary narrative, Chunyu Qiong and his subordinates indulge in drinking, neglecting perimeter vigilance. When Cao Cao’s disguised cavalry ignites the granaries from all directions, the defending commanders scramble to organize a resistance. Brandishing his sabre to reinforce the central granary pavilion, he encounters veteran vanguard officers Zhang Liao and Xu Huang charging through the blaze, ultimately falling in combat as the flames engulf the compound.
