Biography & Historical Record
Sima Zan (司马赞, 司馬贊, Tư Mã Tán; c. 230s–275 AD) was an imperial prince of Western Jin and the fifth son of Prince of Anping Sima Fu (司马孚), the legendary righteous elder of the Sima family.
Because Grand General Sima Shi lacked a male heir, Sima Zan was initially chosen to be adopted into Sima Shi’s household. However, following Sima Zan’s early frailty, Sima Zhao presented his own brilliant second son Sima You (司马攸) to succeed Sima Shi instead, and Sima Zan returned to his father’s branch. Upon the founding of Western Jin in 265 AD, Emperor Wu Sima Yan created Sima Zan as Prince of Guangping (广平王). He passed away peacefully in 275 AD.
