Biography & Historical Record
Qin Ming (秦明, Tần Minh) on this page is a Han / Three Kingdoms literary officer of Wei, not the Liangshan “Thunderbolt” of Water Margin. The Water Margin Qin Ming is a Song-dynasty commander with a wolf-tooth club; he has his own tradition and must not share this slug or these links. The man in Romance of the Three Kingdoms appears only in Chapter 102, during Zhuge Liang (诸葛亮, Gia Cát Lượng)‘s northern campaign against Sima Yi (司马懿, Tư Mã Ý) on the Wei River. He is introduced as the younger brother of the Wei general Qin Lang (秦朗, Tần Lãng), courtesy Yuanming (元明, Nguyên Minh).
Sima Yi needs a false surrender. The Wei officer Zheng Wen (郑文, Trịnh Văn) offers to ride into the Shu camp as a defector. To make the story look true, someone must “die” at his hand. Qin Ming is sent out dressed and announced as Qin Lang. He trades a few bouts with Zheng Wen; Zheng Wen cuts him down and carries the head to Zhuge Liang as proof that he has broken with Wei. Zhuge Liang is not fooled for long: the ruse is probed, Zheng Wen is exposed and beheaded, and the chapter moves on to the wooden oxen and flowing horses. Qin Ming’s entire career in the book is that sacrificial duel — a named body used to decorate a lie.
No Sanguozhi life exists for this Qin Ming. Qin Lang himself is historical (a Cao court figure, son of Qin Yilu and related by marriage to the Cao house). The younger brother who dies in Chapter 102 is Luo Guanzhong’s extra. Do not merge him with Water Margin’s Qin Ming, and do not invent a Guanghan or Shu posting.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
Chapter 102 (Sima Yi Seizes the North Plain and the Wei Bridge; Zhuge Liang Builds Wooden Oxen and Flowing Horses): Sima Yi (司马懿, Tư Mã Ý) holds the Wei River line. Zheng Wen (郑文, Trịnh Văn) is sent to feign surrender. Qin Ming (秦明, Tần Minh), younger brother of Qin Lang (秦朗, Tần Lãng), rides out posing as Qin Lang, fights Zheng Wen, and is killed so that Zheng Wen can present a head to Zhuge Liang (诸葛亮, Gia Cát Lượng). Zhuge Liang later sees through the defection and has Zheng Wen executed. Qin Ming does not appear before or after this decoy. This is not the Water Margin Thunderbolt.
