Biography & Historical Record

During the turbulent Three Kingdoms era, regional borderlands were heavily contested by non-Han ethnic confederations. A prominent Di tribal leader named Qiang Duan commanded forces in the Wudu border region situated between the rival states of Cao Wei and Shu Han. Rather than siding with Liu Bei, he formally submitted to Cao Cao around 215 AD, pledging military allegiance and securing Wei’s northwestern frontier.

The Military Exploits of Qiang Duan

In 218 AD, during the critical Hanzhong Campaign, Shu generals Zhang Fei and Ma Chao stationed their armies at Xiabian, dispatching Wu Lan as vanguard commander. Wei supreme general Cao Hong, alongside Cao Zhen and Zhang He, launched a swift counter-offensive. As the Shu forces collapsed, Qiang Duan led his specialized Di cavalry to cut off their escape route. He decisively ambushed the retreating vanguard, personally beheading Wu Lan and delivering the trophy to Cao Cao, effectively breaking the northern advance of Shu Han.
