Pan Sui (潘遂, Bàn Toại) is a literary Wei officer in Chapter 92. He has no Sanguozhi life and no Pei note. Kongming.net and the usual fictional-cast lists place him under Xiahou Mao (夏侯楙, Hạ Hầu Mậu), courtesy Zilin (子林, Tử Lâm), during Zhuge Liang (诸葛亮, Gia Cát Lượng)‘s first northern expedition — the Fengming Mountain (凤鸣山) trap after Zhao Yun (赵云, Triệu Vân) has already cut down Xiahou Mao’s first screen of officers.

The morning after a Wei rout, Xiahou Mao comes out again with drums and banners. Deng Zhi (邓芝, Đặng Chi) tells Zhao Yun the sudden return is a trick; Zhao Yun answers that he will take the “suckling child” that day and rides out. Pan Sui is the Wei vanguard sent to meet him. They fight fewer than three bouts; Pan Sui wrenches his horse around and flees. That flight is the order, not cowardice in the narrator’s sense: Xiahou Mao needs Zhao Yun deep in the Wei formation. Eight officers then appear, let Xiahou Mao peel away, and themselves break off one after another so that Zhao Yun and Deng Zhi chase into prepared ground. Dong Xi (董禧, Đổng Hĩ) and Xue Ze (薛则, Tiết Tắc) close from left and right; Deng Zhi cannot cut him out. Zhao Yun, down to about a thousand men, is steered by flags on the slope until timber and stone stop him. He fights from chen to you, dismounts to wait for moonlight, and is hit by fire, drums, and crossbows. Guan Xing (关兴, Quan Hưng) and Zhang Bao (张苞, Trương Bào) — Zhang Fei’s son, not Yellow Turban Zhang Bao — break the ring, kill Xue Ze among others, and the night ends in a Wei collapse. Xiahou Mao runs into Nan’an. Pan Sui is not named again after the opening decoy.

Historically Xiahou Mao was a Cao son-in-law posted in the west and was not this kind of field commander; Zhao Yun’s last years are not a Fengming slaughter of five named Wei captains. Pan Sui exists to give the ambush a first contact — a man Zhao Yun can “beat” in three passes so the veteran will believe the chase is his own idea.

Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms

Chapter 92 (Zhao Zilong Cuts Down Five Officers; Zhuge Liang Takes Three Commanderies by Wit): After Zhao Yun (赵云, Triệu Vân) has smashed Xiahou Mao’s (夏侯楙, Hạ Hầu Mậu) first army, Deng Zhi (邓芝, Đặng Chi) smells a second-day fraud. Zhao Yun rides out anyway. Pan Sui (潘遂, Bàn Toại) meets him, lasts under three bouts, and flees on instruction. Eight Wei officers feed the chase; Dong Xi and Xue Ze spring the mountain trap; Zhao Yun is pinned until Guan Xing and Zhang Bao (张苞, Trương Bào) punch through. Xiahou Mao escapes to Nan’an, which Zhuge Liang (诸葛亮, Gia Cát Lượng) later takes by a three-city ruse. Pan Sui’s job is the first feigned defeat — then he vanishes from the book.

• The novel and the histories name no father, mother, spouse, or child for Pan Sui (潘遂, Bàn Toại). He is a one-scene fictional vanguard. Do not attach him to Pan Zhang (潘璋) of Wu or to Empress Pan of Wu without a source.
