Biography & Historical Record
Mu Shun is a fictional military officer appearing in Luo Guanzhong’s classic 14th-century historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. In strict historical reality, Mu Shun does not appear in Chen Shou’s Records of the Three Kingdoms (Sanguozhi) or any authentic Eastern Han historical records. He is an entirely fictional narrative creation invented by Luo Guanzhong to serve as a dramatic foil during the Battle of Hulao Pass in 190 AD. His immediate defeat and death in single combat serve to demonstrate the unmatched martial terror of Lu Bu, building immense dramatic narrative tension prior to the legendary confrontation ‘Three Heroes Combat Lu Bu’ involving Liu Bei, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei.
In Chapter 5 of Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Mu Shun serves as a general under Zhang Yang, the Grand Administrator of Hanoi Commandery and one of the eighteen regional warlords joining the grand coalition against the tyrannical prime minister Dong Zhuo. When the allied warlord forces advance toward Hulao Pass to strike at Luoyang, Dong Zhuo dispatches Lu Bu to command the defensive garrison. Lu Bu quickly demonstrates his overwhelming martial strength by spearing Fang Yue (a senior officer under Wang Kuang) to death in under five bouts and scattering the coalition vanguard.
Deeply concerned by Lu Bu’s martial prowess, the coalition forces fall back thirty li to establish camp and deliberate strategy. Lu Bu then leads his iron cavalry directly outside the coalition camp, shouting provocations and flaunting his military arrogance. Determined to prove his courage, restore the demoralized coalition spirit, and win glory for Zhang Yang, Mu Shun grips his long spear, mounts his warhorse, and sallies out single-handedly to engage Lu Bu. However, the disparity in martial prowess is immense. Mounted on Red Hare and wielding his Sky-Piercing Halberd, Lu Bu strikes Mu Shun down in the very first bout of combat, impaling him and knocking him dead off his horse. Mu Shun’s swift demise, alongside the subsequent defeats of Wu Anguo and Gongsun Zan, establishes Lu Bu’s supreme martial wall before Liu Bei, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei step forward to battle him.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
In Luo Guanzhong’s Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Mu Shun’s character arc occurs in Chapter 5 during the Grand Coalition’s campaign at Hulao Pass. Serving under Zhang Yang, Mu Shun courageously rides out armed with a spear to duel Lu Bu in an effort to lift the allied army’s falling morale. He is killed in the very first pass by Lu Bu’s halberd, serving as a narrative stepping stone to emphasize Lu Bu’s peerless martial prowess prior to the battle against Liu Bei, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei.
