Biography & Historical Record
Lord Kou (侯寇, Hầu Khấu) on this slug is not a separate general named Hou Kou. The 汉字 write the title-plus-clan of the Kou house of the Luo marquisate (罗侯寇氏) — the natal family of the boy the novel calls Kou Feng (寇封, Khấu Phong), later Liu Feng (刘封, Lưu Phong). Chen Shou says Liu Feng was “originally a son of the Kou (or Guan) clan of the Luo marquis, a Changsha Liu sister’s son.” Romance Chapter 36 turns that note into a parlor scene at Fancheng: county magistrate Liu Bi (刘泌, Lưu Bí) — a Han cadet, not the Yellow Turban Liu Bi (刘辟, Lưu Tịch) — presents his orphaned nephew. Liu Bei (刘备, Lưu Bị) likes the youth’s bearing, adopts him, and renames him Liu Feng. Guan Yu (关羽, Quan Vũ) already fears a future clash with a blood son and objects to a “mantis-larva” heir; Liu Bei answers that if he treats the boy as a son, the boy will serve as a son.
The biological Kou father is already dead when the novel speaks; “Lord Kou” is the empty chair at that table — the Luo-marquis house whose name the boy sheds. History never names the father. Later Liu Feng fights into Yi, holds the Upper Yong corridor with Meng Da (孟达, Mạnh Đạt), refuses Guan Yu’s calls from Fan, is beaten after Meng Da defects, and is ordered to suicide in Chengdu (220). That tragedy is Liu Feng’s article. This page keeps the natal label Chapter 36 utters when the adoption happens.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
Chapter 36 (Xuande Takes Fancheng by Stratagem; Yuanzhi Rides Off and Recommends Zhuge Liang): After Xu Shu (徐庶, Từ Thứ)‘s plans take Fancheng, Liu Bei goes to Liu Bi’s house. A young man stands in attendance. Liu Bi says he is sister’s son Kou Feng, child of the Luo Marquis Kou house, parents dead, living on an uncle. Liu Bei asks to adopt him; the boy bows, takes the Liu surname, and is told to greet Guan Yu and Zhang Fei as uncles. Guan Yu’s unease is the seed of Chapter 79. The same chapter then sends Xu Shu away on a forged letter and, on the road, he recommends Zhuge Liang. Lord Kou never walks on; he is the clan name spoken over the adoption cup.
Lord Kou (侯寇) — Historical & Literary Timeline
Kou house of Luo marquis
SGZ: Liu Feng is a Luo-marquis Kou (or Guan) son and a Changsha Liu nephew. Father already dead in the novel.

The feared clash arrives
Liu Feng is forced to suicide after Fan’s fall and Meng Da’s defection — the end of the Kou-born son, not of a separate Hou Kou general.

Key Relationships
Family
- Biological house: Kou clan of the Luo marquisate (罗侯寇氏). Father unnamed, already dead in Chapter 36.
- Son (novel name) Kou Feng, after adoption Liu Feng (刘封, Lưu Phong).
- Maternal uncle Liu Bi (刘泌, Lưu Bí) of Changsha — plain text; /liu-bi/ is 刘辟, a different 汉字.
Friends
- No sworn brothers. The “friend” of this house in Chapter 36 is Liu Bei (刘备, Lưu Bị), who takes the orphan in.
Enemies
- No personal foe for the dead father. The later enemy of the son is the succession fear voiced by Guan Yu (关羽, Quan Vũ) and fulfilled in Chengdu.
Other
- Xu Shu (徐庶, Từ Thứ): the strategist who takes Fancheng in the same chapter and then rides off to recommend Zhuge Liang — the military frame around the adoption.
- Zhang Fei (张飞, Trương Phi): told to accept the boy as a nephew in the same parlor.
- Meng Da (孟达, Mạnh Đạt): later partner and then destroyer of Liu Feng’s Upper Yong command.
In Novel
Chapter 36
- Lord Kou (侯寇, Hầu Khấu) is the Luo-marquis Kou clan name, not a walking general. At Fancheng, Liu Bi (刘泌, Lưu Bí) tells Liu Bei (刘备, Lưu Bị) that the handsome attendant is his nephew Kou Feng (寇封, Khấu Phong), child of that house, parents dead. Liu Bei adopts him as Liu Feng (刘封, Lưu Phong). Guan Yu (关羽, Quan Vũ) objects to a non-blood heir. Xu Shu (徐庶, Từ Thứ)'s Fancheng victory and his later ride to recommend Zhuge Liang occupy the rest of the chapter.
In History
Summary
- Chen Shou never lists a general 侯寇. He says Liu Feng was a son of the Luo-marquis Kou/Guan clan and a Changsha Liu nephew, adopted because Liu Bei still lacked an heir when he reached Jing.
Year: Jing years (before Liu Shan, 207)
- Adoption in Jing; by the Yi campaign (c. 213) Liu Feng is already in his twenties and fighting with Zhang Fei and Zhuge Liang upriver.
Historical Record
- Sanguozhi Shu 10 (刘封传): 本罗侯寇氏之子,长沙刘氏之甥也. Novel Ch.36 dramatizes the uncle, the bow, and Guan Yu's protest. This slug keeps the natal label; the career is Liu Feng's.
