Biography & Historical Record
Liu Zuan (刘纂, Lưu Toản) was an Eastern Wu imperial son-in-law who rose to General of Chariots and Cavalry. Early he married a daughter of Sun Quan (孙权, Tôn Quyền); after she died, and after Chancellor Zhu Ju (朱据, Chu Cứ) was forced to suicide (250), he took Zhu Ju’s widow Sun Luyu (孙鲁育, Tôn Lỗ Dục), the princess called Xiaohu (小虎, Tiểu Hổ), as successor wife. In Jiahe 4 (235) he and Tang Zi (唐咨, Đường Tư) served as deputies to Lu Dai (吕岱, Lã Đại) against the Luling–Nanhai rebels Li Huan and Luo Li; the revolt was crushed. Under Sun Liang he remained a senior banner. In Taiping 1 (256) Sun Jun (孙峻, Tôn Tuấn) sent Lu Ju (吕据, Lã Cứ), Liu Zuan, Zhu Yi, Tang Zi, and the Wei defector Wen Qin north from Jiangdu toward Qing and Xu. Sun Jun died; Sun Chen (孙綝, Tôn Lâm) recalled the army. When Lu Ju refused to bow, the court ordered Liu Zuan and others to turn on him; Lu Ju died. Liu Zuan kept the Chariots-and-Cavalry title into the Sun Xiu and Sun Hao years and, after Shu fell, argued against easy peace with Jin — send spies, watch, strike if the chance came. He was also remembered as a calligrapher. Courtesy name and birth-commandery are not preserved.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
Chapter 108 (Ding Feng Fights in the Snow with Short Weapons; Sun Jun Springs a Secret Plan at the Banquet): Wei columns threaten the lower Yangzi. Zhuge Ke (诸葛恪, Gia Cát Khác) hears Ding Feng (丁奉, Đinh Phụng) name Dongxing as the lock on Nanjun and Wuchang. Zhuge Ke sends Ding Feng with three thousand water troops and orders Lu Ju (吕据, Lã Cứ), Tang Zi (唐咨, Đường Tư), and Liu Zuan (刘纂, Lưu Toản) each to bring ten thousand horse-and-foot on three supporting roads, to advance together when the string of cannon sounds; Zhuge Ke will follow with the main army. Ding Feng’s snow fight wins Dongxing. The novel then follows Zhuge Ke’s disastrous Xincheng siege and Sun Jun’s banquet murder — Liu Zuan is not given a second speech. History’s later 256 Huai–Si campaign and the order to attack Lu Ju are the career the chapter only begins.
