Liu Zheng

Liu Zheng (刘政, Lưu Chính) of Beihai (北海国; west of today’s Changle, Shandong) was an Eastern Han man of “courage and strategic spirit” (勇略雄气), not a Grand Administrator in the novel’s Chapter 3 capital crisis. Catalogs that call him thái thú and drop him into Dong Zhuo’s 189 Luoyang have the wrong scene. The surviving story sits in the Liaodong refugee circle of Bing Yuan (邴原, Bính Nguyên), courtesy Genju (根矩), and Gongsun Du (公孙度, Công Tôn Độ).

When the Central Plain broke up, Bing Yuan and fellow Beihai men — including Liu Zheng — crossed to Liaodong. Gongsun Du welcomed classicists such as Guan Ning, but he could not tolerate a guest who talked like a future hegemon. He moved to arrest and kill Liu Zheng, seized the family, and posted that anyone who hid him shared the crime. Liu Zheng vanished into Bing Yuan’s house for more than a month. Bing Yuan then asked Taishi Ci (太史慈, Thái Sử Từ), who was passing from Liaodong toward Beihai, to smuggle Liu Zheng back to the Plain; afterwards Bing Yuan himself talked Gongsun Du down and recovered the household. The episode is a Beihai-network rescue, not a prefect’s battle. Romance of the Three Kingdoms never stages Liu Zheng: Chapter 3 is Ding Yuan, Lu Bu, and Dong Zhuo; Taishi Ci’s famous novel work is later (Ch.15 Jiangdong). History keeps the Liaodong scare; the novel is silent.

Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms

The 120-chapter novel does not give Liu Zheng (刘政, Lưu Chính) a speaking entrance. Chapter 3 (In Wenming Garden, Dong Zhuo Provokes Ding Yuan; With the Gold Lock, Li Su Bribes Lu Bu) is the Luoyang usurpation: Ding Yuan, Lu Bu, Dong Zhuo. Liu Zheng is not in that hall or on that wall. Officer lists that stamp “Chapter 3 / Han taishou / Beihai” are catalog gravity toward Kong Rong’s later Beihai and toward Taishi Ci, not a Luo Guanzhong scene. Readers who want the man behind the 汉字 must use Bing Yuan’s Liaodong year and Taishi Ci’s escort, then return to the novel’s Taishi Ci chapters knowing Liu Zheng is the historical passenger those pages omit.
