Biography & Historical Record

Liu Lin (刘粼 / 刘琳, Lưu Lân) was a noble officer and court official of Cao Wei during the Three Kingdoms era. Originating from Handan in Guangping Commandery, he was the son and successor of Liu Shao (刘劭), the famed political theorist, legalist codifier, and author of the celebrated treatise Renwu Zhi (人物志, The Study of Human Abilities).

Reared in an atmosphere of rigorous judicial jurisprudence and statecraft, Liu Lin was well-versed in the legal codes and bureaucratic systems devised by his father for Emperor Wen (Cao Pi) and Emperor Ming (Cao Rui). Upon Liu Shao’s death during the Zhengshi era (240–249 AD), Liu Lin inherited the hereditary peerage of Marquis of Guannei (关内侯), continuing his family’s service within the central ministries of Cao Wei.
