The Life of Liang Mao in History

Liang Mao (died c. 217–220 AD), courtesy name Bofang, was a distinguished scholar and high-ranking minister of the late Eastern Han dynasty who served the emerging state of Cao Wei during the turbulent Three Kingdoms era. Renowned since his youth for erudition and impeccable moral uprightness, he earned widespread admiration among contemporary scholars.

Initially nominated as a Xiaolian (Filial and Incorrupt), he declined numerous imperial invitations. In 196 AD, when warlord Cao Cao took office as Minister of Works, the scholar accepted a post and was later designated Administrator of Lelang Commandery. On his way north, he was seized and detained by Gongsun Du, the independent warlord ruling Liaodong.

During Cao Cao’s northern campaign against the Wuhuan, Gongsun Du sought to launch an opportunist assault against Cao Cao’s administrative headquarters at Ye. Attempting to enlist moral backing, Gongsun Du consulted his captive. In response, the defiant official delivered a blistering moral rebuke that exposed the futility of rebellion. Shamed by this unshakeable rectitude, the regional warlord abandoned his military ambition.

After regaining his freedom, the scholar served as Chancellor of Guangling and Administrator of Wei Commandery. In 217 AD, following the formal investiture of Cao Pi as Crown Prince of Wei, the court appointed Liang Mao as his Grand Tutor (Taizi Taifu). Revered by the Wei royal family for his integrity, he passed away in office shortly before the founding of the Wei dynasty.
