Biography & Historical Record
Lady Xu (徐夫人, Từ Phu Nhân) on this slug is Sun Quan (孙权, Tôn Quyền)‘s consort, daughter of Xu Kun (徐琨, Từ Côn), the woman who raised the heir Sun Deng (孙登, Tôn Đăng) and was later sent away to Wu commandery. She is not Mother Xu (徐母, Từ Mẫu) of Xu Shu (徐庶, Từ Thứ) — that woman is the Chapter 36 letter and the Cao camp, site slug /mother-xu/. She is not the other Lady Xu who was wife of Sun Yi (孙翊, Tôn Dực) and avenged him in Danyang (novel Chapter 38). The import Vietnamese Chờ Phu Nhân is a bad reading of 徐; this site’s other Xu names (Từ Thứ, Từ Côn) use Từ, and this article follows that.
Chen Shou’s Sun Deng notice is the core: Sun Deng’s birth mother was of low rank; Lady Xu had “the grace of a mother’s raising” from his childhood; she was later deposed for jealousy and parked in Wu; Lady Bu became the favourite. When Lady Bu sent gifts, Sun Deng accepted them standing; when Lady Xu’s messenger brought clothes, he bathed before he put them on. Asked to be named heir, he said a heir should wait on a queen; Sun Quan asked where his mother was; “In Wu,” he said, and Sun Quan fell silent. The novel Chapter 108, recapping the succession as Sun Quan lies dying, flattens this into “Crown Prince Sun Deng, born of Lady Xu, died in Chiwu 4.” History: adoptive / raising mother, not birth mother; death year of the lady herself is unknown.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
Chapter 108 (Ding Feng’s snow-robe plot; Sun Quan dies; Zhuge Ke and Sun Jun): The chapter opens the Wu succession, not a palace scene for the lady. “The ruler of Wu, Sun Quan (孙权, Tôn Quyền), had first the heir Sun Deng (孙登, Tôn Đăng), born of Lady Xu (徐夫人, Từ Phu Nhân); he died in Wu’s Chiwu 4. Then the second son Sun He (孙和, Tôn Hòa), born of Lady Wang of Langya, was named heir, fell out with Princess Quan, was slandered, and was deposed, dying of grief. Then the third son Sun Liang (孙亮, Tôn Lượng), born of Lady Pan (潘夫人, Phan Phu Nhân), was named heir.” Landslides of pine and cypress, illness, the deathbed charge to Zhuge Ke (诸葛恪, Gia Cát Khác) and Lü Dai, and the burial at Jiangling follow. Lady Xu does not enter the sickroom, speak, or die on the page. The novel’s “born of” is the historical error; Chen Shou says she raised a son whose birth mother was humble. The rest of the chapter is Sima Shi’s three-pronged attack on Wu and Zhuge Ke’s later fall — none of it is her plot.
Lady Xu (徐夫人) — Historical & Literary Timeline
Consort; raises Sun Deng
Daughter of Xu Kun, married to Sun Quan. Raises the future heir whose birth mother was of low status. Later deposed for jealousy and sent to Wu commandery while Lady Bu held favour.
The heir’s loyalty
Sun Deng accepts Lady Bu’s gifts standing, bathes to wear Lady Xu’s clothes, and asks that a queen be named before a heir. Sun Quan will not restore her.
Named in the death recap
Novel: “Sun Deng, born of Lady Xu, died Chiwu 4.” Then Sun He, then Sun Liang. She has no death scene of her own.
For the Wu consort, see Lady Xu (Sun Quan’s wife). Do not use the Sun Yi article.
Key Relationships
Family
- Father Xu Kun (徐琨, Từ Côn), Wu general of the Xu clan allied to Lady Wu’s house.
- Husband Sun Quan (孙权, Tôn Quyền). Raising-son (history) / novel “birth son” Sun Deng (孙登, Tôn Đăng). Not the mother of Sun He or Sun Liang.
- Not Mother Xu of Xu Shu (/mother-xu/). Not Sun Yi’s avenging widow.
Friends
- Sun Deng (孙登, Tôn Đăng): the child who treated her as mother after the deposition and asked for her to be made queen. That bond is the whole historical portrait.
Enemies
- Lady Bu (步夫人, Bộ Phu Nhân): the favourite whose rise went with Lady Xu’s removal. No dedicated site post — plain text. The novel does not stage a fight between them in Chapter 108.
Other
- Sun He (孙和, Tôn Hòa), Sun Liang (孙亮, Tôn Lượng), Lady Pan (潘氏, Phan Thị), Zhuge Ke (诸葛恪, Gia Cát Khác): the Chapter 108 succession cast named in the same recap. They are the court after her withdrawal, not her household.
In Novel
Chapter 108
- Lady Xu (徐夫人, Từ Phu Nhân): Named only in the opening recap of Sun Quan (孙权, Tôn Quyền)'s heirs as he falls ill. The novel says Crown Prince Sun Deng (孙登, Tôn Đăng) was "born of Lady Xu" and died in Chiwu 4, after which Sun He (孙和, Tôn Hòa) and then Sun Liang (孙亮, Tôn Lượng) were named. She does not appear at the deathbed, and the chapter moves on to Zhuge Ke (诸葛恪, Gia Cát Khác) and the Wei attack. History disagrees on "born of": she raised Sun Deng; the birth mother was humble.
