Biography & Historical Record

Lady Sun (孙夫人, Tôn Phu Nhân) on this page is Sun Jian (孙坚, Tôn Kiên) and Lady Wu (吴夫人, Ngô Phu Nhân)’s daughter, younger sister of Sun Ce (孙策, Tôn Sách) and Sun Quan (孙权, Tôn Quyền), and the Wu wife of Liu Bei (刘备, Lưu Bị). Official histories never give her a personal name. Later drama and games call her Sun Shangxiang (孙尚香, Tôn Thượng Hương) — the same woman as the existing Sun Shangxiang post, not a second sister. She is not Sun Quan’s other consorts, and not a generic “Lady Sun” of a different commandery.

History is brief and bleak: after the 209 Jingzhou settlement Liu Bei married a daughter of the Sun house; when the Sun–Liu alliance cracked over Jingzhou she returned east, and her end is unrecorded. The novel builds the famous arc around that skeleton — the armed wedding at Nanxu (Ch.54–55), the attempt to carry Liu Shan (刘禅, Lưu Thiện) back to Wu (Ch.61), and her final departure as Jingzhou burns (Ch.73–77, 80–84).

Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms

Chapter 54 (The Dowager Buddha Listens to a Secret; a Beauty Scheme Is Laid at Nanxu): Zhou Yu writes to Sun Quan: invite Liu Bei to marry “the princess,” then hold him in Wu so Jingzhou can be claimed. Lady Sun is introduced as a martial daughter who drills armed maidens and keeps weapons on the walls of her apartments. Liu Bei crosses the river in fear. Zhuge Liang gives Zhao Yun three brocade bags. The first bag sends Liu Bei to the Qiao elder and then to the State Mother (Lady Wu / Wu Guotai). The mother likes Liu Bei’s looks and will not treat the wedding as a prison.

Chapter 55 (Xuande Cleverly Takes a Beauty; Kongming’s Second Plan Escapes the River): The wedding is celebrated in earnest. Lady Sun’s maidens stand under arms at the feast; Liu Bei is alarmed; she laughs and orders the weapons down for the night, but the household remains a Wu fortress. Zhou Yu still means to keep the groom. Zhuge Liang’s second and third bags — a fake report that Cao Cao is attacking Jingzhou, then a New Year shrine visit to the river — get Liu Bei and Lady Sun onto a boat. Jiang Qin, Zhou Tai and others pursue; Lady Sun herself scolds the Wu captains from the deck, claiming her mother’s authority, and the pursuers dare not board. Zhao Yun and, later, Zhuge Liang’s prepared boats complete the escape. Wu has lost both the hostage and the bride.

Chapter 61 (Zhao Yun Recaptures A Dou; Sun Quan Writes to Demand Jingzhou): After Liu Bei takes Yi Province, Sun Quan’s agents persuade Lady Sun to sail home with the child Liu Shan as a bargaining piece. Zhao Yun races to the river, fights onto the boat, and seizes A Dou; Zhang Fei blocks the shore. Lady Sun continues east alone. The novel uses her as the human form of the broken alliance: she is still Wu’s daughter and no longer Shu’s hostage-wife.

Chapters 73–77 and 80–84: While Guan Yu holds Jingzhou, Wu’s anger at the marriage-and-province deal hardens. After Guan Yu’s fall and Liu Bei’s eastern campaign, editions vary on her last act. Some keep her silent in Wu; later tradition has her drown herself when she hears Liu Bei is dead at Baidicheng. History does not confirm the suicide. What the novel has already established is enough: she was the only Sun who lived inside Liu Bei’s household, and she left it by force of her own clan.
