Biography & Historical Record
Lady of Wuyang (舞阳君, Vũ Dương Quân), personal name Xing (兴, Hưng) in the Hou Hanshu empress chronicle, was the mother of General-in-Chief He Jin (何进, Hà Tiến), of Empress He (何皇后, Hà Hoàng Hậu) — consort of Emperor Ling (汉灵帝, Hán Linh Đế) — and of He Miao (何苗, Hà Miêu), who was born Zhu Miao from her earlier marriage. The He household rose from Nanyang butchers. When her daughter became empress (181), the court posthumously honoured the father He Zhen (何真, Hà Chân) as Marquis Xuande of Wuyang and named the living mother Lady of Wuyang. She used that title through the 189 succession crisis and died when Dong Zhuo (董卓, Đổng Trác) destroyed the He clan after seizing Luoyang.
She is not a battlefield commander. Her weight in both the novel and the histories is political: she and He Miao took eunuch gifts, then blocked He Jin’s purge inside the palace, so the Ten Attendants survived long enough to murder the General-in-Chief. Dong Zhuo later killed her together with Empress Dowager He. The vacant Chapter 3 heading that listed no family was wrong; the Wuyang title exists because of that household, and Chapter 3 is the chapter in which their hesitation becomes fatal.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
Chapter 2–3 (the He Jin crisis): After Emperor Ling (汉灵帝, Hán Linh Đế) dies, Jian Shuo (蹇硕, Kiển Thạc) tries to enthrone Liu Xie and kill He Jin; the plot fails and Jian Shuo dies. Yuan Shao (袁绍, Viên Thiệu) then presses He Jin to wipe out the Ten Eunuchs (十常侍, Thập Thường Thị). Empress He hesitates. The eunuchs buy the mother and the half-brother: Lady of Wuyang (舞阳君, Vũ Dương Quân) and He Miao receive bribes and tell the Empress Dowager that a complete slaughter of the inner palace would be ungrateful. Zhang Rang (张让, Trương Nhượng) kneels to his daughter-in-law — Empress He’s sister — and begs one last audience; the plea reaches Lady of Wuyang, who carries it into the palace, and the Empress Dowager lets the attendants back on duty. He Jin then walks in without an escort on a forged summons and is cut down. Yuan Shao massacres eunuchs; Dong Zhuo occupies the vacuum, deposes Emperor Shao (汉少帝, Hán Thiếu Đế), poisons Empress Dowager He, and kills the Lady of Wuyang.

Key Relationships
Family
- He Zhen (何真, Hà Chân): Second husband; Nanyang butcher; posthumous Marquis Xuande of Wuyang (history).
- Earlier husband of the Zhu clan: father of He Miao; the empress chronicle records the two marriages (history).
- He Jin (何进, Hà Tiến): Son; General-in-Chief whose purge she helps stall (novel Ch.2–3 / Hou Hanshu 69).
- Empress He (何皇后, Hà Hoàng Hậu): Daughter; Empress then Empress Dowager; poisoned by Dong Zhuo days before (or with) her mother.
- He Miao (何苗, Hà Miêu): Son by the first marriage (Zhu Miao); General of Chariots and Cavalry; shares the eunuch bribes; later killed in the Luoyang street fighting.
- Emperor Shao (汉少帝, Hán Thiếu Đế) / Liu Bian: Grandson enthroned in 189, then deposed by Dong Zhuo.
- A younger daughter married Zhang Rang’s son Zhang Feng (张奉) — the channel Zhang Rang uses to reach Wuyang (Hou Hanshu 69).
Friends
- No sworn political allies outside the He inner household. Her “friends” in 189 are the eunuchs who pay her to keep them alive — a bought protection, not a friendship of principle.
Enemies
- Dong Zhuo (董卓, Đổng Trác): Kills her after taking Luoyang (history; novel aftermath of Ch.3).
- Yuan Shao (袁绍, Viên Thiệu): Architect of the purge she obstructs; after He Jin’s death his men slaughter the palace (novel Ch.3).
Other
- Zhang Rang (张让, Trương Nhượng) and Duan Gui (段珪, Đoàn Khuê): Lead the restored attendants who murder He Jin; Zhang Rang’s in-law plea is what Wuyang carries to the Empress Dowager.
- Jian Shuo (蹇硕, Kiển Thạc): First eunuch commander destroyed in the same crisis; his death is what opens the larger purge debate Wuyang then blocks.
- Emperor Ling (汉灵帝, Hán Linh Đế): Son-in-law whose death starts the regency.
- Emperor Xian (汉献帝, Hán Hiến Đế) / Liu Xie: Rival prince Jian Shuo and the Dong consort faction wanted; Dong Zhuo later enthrones him.
In Novel
Chapter 2
- Lady of Wuyang (舞阳君, Vũ Dương Quân): After Emperor Ling (汉灵帝, Hán Linh Đế) dies and Jian Shuo (蹇硕, Kiển Thạc) fails to kill He Jin (何进, Hà Tiến), the remaining attendants buy influence in the He inner household. The novel, following Hou Hanshu, places the mother and He Miao (何苗, Hà Miêu) among those who tell Empress He (何皇后, Hà Hoàng Hậu) not to let He Jin slaughter the palace.
Chapter 3
- Lady of Wuyang (舞阳君, Vũ Dương Quân): Zhang Rang (张让, Trương Nhượng) kneels to his daughter-in-law (Empress He’s sister) and begs one last audience; the plea reaches Wuyang, who carries it into the palace. The Empress Dowager restores the attendants. He Jin then walks in on a forged summons and is cut down. Yuan Shao (袁绍, Viên Thiệu) massacres eunuchs; Dong Zhuo (董卓, Đổng Trác) seizes Luoyang, deposes Emperor Shao (汉少帝, Hán Thiếu Đế), poisons the Empress Dowager, and kills the Lady of Wuyang — the He house ends in the same autumn.
