Biography & Historical Record
Lady Mu (某氏, Mỗ thị) was a noblewoman of the late Eastern Han dynasty and the principal wife of the northern warlord Gongsun Zan (公孙瓒, Công Tôn Toản). She was the daughter of the Grand Administrator of Zhuo Commandery. During Gongsun Zan’s youth, despite belonging to a family of hereditary officials, his low maternal birth limited him to the minor post of Commandery Registrar. Impressed by Gongsun Zan’s handsome features, resonant voice, and sharp intellect, her father broke social conventions by giving Lady Mu to him in marriage.
Her family provided the financial backing and social connections that launched Gongsun Zan’s rise. Lady Mu’s father funded Gongsun Zan’s studies under the grand scholar Lu Zhi (卢植, Lô Thực), where Gongsun Zan befriended his classmate Liu Bei (刘备, Lưu Bị). In 199 AD, as Yuan Shao (袁绍, Viên Thiệu) breached the inner defenses of Yijing Citadel, Gongsun Zan realized defeat was inevitable. To prevent his family from falling into enemy hands, Gongsun Zan strangled Lady Mu, his sisters, and his children before setting fire to the citadel and committing suicide.

Chapter 21 (Cao Cao Discusses Heroes Over Warm Wine; Guan Yu Takes Xiapi and Kills Che Zhou): Although Lady Mu (某氏, Mỗ thị) is not depicted on stage in the main dialogue, her tragic end forms part of the narrative climax surrounding the fall of Yijing. When Yuan Shao (袁绍, Viên Thiệu) undermines the citadel, Gongsun Zan (公孙瓒, Công Tôn Toản) kills his wife and children to preserve their honor before burning his high tower, ending the Northern warlord’s house.
