Biography & Historical Record

Jiao Bing (焦炳, Giao Bảnh) is a fictional Cao Wei captain under Wen Pin (文聘, Văn Sính) in the Han River fighting of Romance Chapter 71. When Zhao Yun (赵云, Triệu Vân) rides to pull Huang Zhong (黄忠, Hoàng Trung) out of the northern hills, he meets a blocking column, asks where the Shu men are, and is told “already slaughtered.” Zhao Yun kills him with one spear. He has no Sanguozhi line, no courtesy name, no tomb. His job in the chapter is to show that Zhao Yun will not accept a lie on a rescue ride — and to fall immediately before Wen Pin’s larger force.

The same ride also kills Murong Lie (慕容烈, Mộ Dung Liệt) in many editions (another fictional Wei name, site slug /murong-lie/). History of the 219 Hanzhong / Han River campaign has Huang Zhong, Zhao Yun, and Zhang He; it does not have Jiao Bing.

Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms

Chapter 71 (Zhan Huang Zhong Occupies the River Han; Zhao Zilong’s Empty Camp Terrifies Cao Cao — the Huang Zhong / Zhao Yun half): Huang Zhong goes to seize Cao grain in the northern hills and does not return at the agreed drum. Zhao Yun takes a thin escort and rides in. He first cuts down Murong Lie’s blocking party, then meets Jiao Bing’s column. “Where are the Shu troops?” Jiao Bing answers that they have already been killed to the last man. Zhao Yun, in a rage, puts the spear through him and rides on. Behind Jiao Bing stand Wen Pin’s men and the larger Wei net of Zhang He (张郃, Trương Cáp) and Xu Huang (徐晃, Từ Hoảng). Zhao Yun finds Huang Zhong, fights out, then (in the famous sequel of the same arc) holds an empty camp with the gates open until Cao Cao’s host dares not enter. Jiao Bing is already a corpse at the side of that ride. He is not a named duelist of Hanzhong in Chen Shou; he is the officer who chose to mock the question and died for the sentence.
