Biography & Historical Record
Jiang Yan (蒋延, Tưởng Diên) is an Eastern Wu official of the post-Sun Quan court who appears in Romance Chapter 108 as the man who reads a white rainbow as a death-omen and tells Zhuge Ke (诸葛恪, Gia Cát Khác) to turn the northern expedition around. Zhuge Ke orders him beheaded for “unlucky talk”; the other officers beg him off; he is reduced to commoner status. That is his whole novel. He is not a field captain of Hefei or Dongxing — those scenes belong to Ding Feng (丁奉, Đinh Phụng) in the same chapter.
Chen Shou does not give Jiang Yan a Shu-style biography. The white-rainbow protest is novel craft on a real campaign: after Sun Quan’s death (252) Sima Shi struck Wu, Ding Feng won at Dongxing, and Zhuge Ke, overconfident, pushed on to Xincheng, wasted the army, and was murdered by Sun Jun (孙峻, Tôn Tuấn) at a banquet. A named remonstrant who is nearly killed for an omen fits Luo Guanzhong’s habit of placing one honest voice in front of a doomed regent.
Role in Romance of the Three Kingdoms
Chapter 108 (Ding Feng’s Short Weapons in the Snow; Sun Jun’s Secret Plan at the Banquet): After Ding Feng’s Dongxing victory, Zhuge Ke will not stop. He writes to Jiang Wei to strike Wei from the north and raises two hundred thousand to enter the Central Plain. On the march a white vapour rises from the ground and blanks the ranks. Jiang Yan says: “This is a white rainbow, an omen of losing the army. The Grand Mentor should return to court and not attack Wei.” Zhuge Ke explodes: “How dare you speak ill and slacken my men?” He calls warriors to cut Jiang Yan down. The assembled officers plead; Zhuge Ke commutes the sentence to degradation — 贬为庶人 — and drives the army on to Xincheng. Zhang Te holds the city; Wu starves; Sima Shi waits. The same chapter then shows Sun Jun and Sun Liang (孙亮, Tôn Lượng) inviting Zhuge Ke to a feast and killing him. Jiang Yan is not at that feast. His function is the ignored omen: the one Wu civil voice who said the white air meant a corpse-count, and who was stripped of office for saying it.
